FIND ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Whole Body Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is the practice of using cold temperatures to support healing and wellness and dates back to ancient civilizations. Whole body cryotherapy is the modern application and stimulates the same rejuvenating and recovery benefits at a whole new level of cold in just three minutes.

How exactly does it work?

The cryo sauna uses nitrogen gas to lower the client’s skin surface and keeps it that way for 2-3 minutes. The skin reacts to the cold and sends messages to the brain that stimulates the body to go into survival mode (fight or flight) by shunting blood from the extremities to the core where the blood is enriched with oxygen, enzymes and nutrients. As the body re-warms, this nutrient rich blood is pushed back to the extremities. Enriched blood promotes internal organ regeneration, expels toxins from subcutaneous layers, initiates cell renewal process, triggers replacement of damaged cells and eliminates dead cells from peripheral tissues. Or simply put, it is rejuvenation of the body at the cellular level.

Is Cryotherapy like an ice bath?

Whole body cryotherapy is similar to an ice bath in that it is a cold therapy. There are key differences. A whole body cryotherapy session is a maximum of three-minutes and an ice-bath is a maximum of twenty-minutes. Cryotherapy is a dry, painless cold; and an ice-bath, at a minimum, is uncomfortable. Whole body cryotherapy cold only penetrates the top layers of skin; an ice bath penetrates into the muscles and joints which introduces the potential for tissue damage and the potential to lower the body’s core temperature. Whole body cryotherapy cold dissipates quickly; ice bath cold dissipates gradually.

How often can I do Cryotherapy sessions and what is recommended?

Cryotherapy can be as frequent as daily and many find the daily routine provides the most consistent results. However, we have found that at least two to three sessions per week has provided great results as well. While every cryo session can be beneficial, we recommend our regular clients consider one of our packages that will get you 12-20 sessions over the course of a month. As a maintenance program, we suggest that this series be repeated every three months. Professional athletes will often have up to two sessions a day to help achieve peak performance with a minimum of 5 hours in between.

Can I workout immediately before or after my exposure?

Yes. In fact, it is recommended. If you work out before your exposure, you can expect greater recovery due to the inflammation reduction. You just need to be dry by the time you step into our sauna. If you work-out after your exposure, you can expect a higher pain tolerance, more energy and greater flexibility.

Who should not use Whole Body Cryotherapy?

The following conditions are contraindications to whole body cryotherapy: Pregnancy, severe Hypertension (BP> 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s Syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, cold allergy (being allergic to cold), acute kidney and urinary tract diseases. *Any client with a recent history (within the last six months) of cardiac disease or episodes will be required to have a physician’s statement clearing them to try whole body cryotherapy.

Are there age restrictions?

Yes. Although the cryotherapy triggers normal body responses to cold, ours are only designed for an adult-sized body. It cannot hurt children, yet they are simply too small for our cryo sauna. We recommend clients be at least 16 years old with parental consent. For those clients who are between 14-15 years old, both a physician’s release and parental consent form are required.

How soon after my treatment can I expect results?

Results can vary dependent on the individual and we cannot guarantee that any of our clients will see specific results, however we can tell you that you’ll likely feel great right away. Usually our clients experience a release of endorphins, the body’s natural mood elevator, a lift that can last for several hours. Depending on your physical condition, you may feel immediate relief from joint and muscle pain, improved energy, and increased flexibility that can last for several hours or even days. Again, we really suggest a minimum of 3 visits in one week to gauge your body’s reaction to this amazing therapy!

Before a session, Cryo Planet takes every guests’ blood pressure and asks several medical history questions. When was Whole Body Cryotherapy developed?
